War threatens at the very shores of home. With Hitler in Europe and devious cousin Kenneth at the doorstep, Billy’s world is about to change.

Lonely Billy had longed for a playmate, but when his chilly parents introduce his frail, and artistic cousin, Kenneth, Billy’s life becomes a nightmare. Kenneth sets out to manipulate and torment him, Uncle Frank is an outright bully, and Billy’s parents only see Kenneth’s porcelain looks, not his darker soul.

The same emotions that enabled Hitler’s rise – envy over strength, desire for new territory – now ferment in the Wilson home.

Billy makes a secret discovery: the sighting of a precious Cossack sabre owned by his father’s colleague. Billy comforts himself by imagining he has the sabre’s power. As war becomes a reality, the sabre becomes an icon that sustains Billy through parental coldness, his uncle’s bullying, separation, evacuation, hardship, and above all, against Kenneth’s invasion of his personal space.
