Caleb Whitaker

Caleb Whitaker learned young that a man can inherit a name, a rifle, and a capacity for violence, but he still chooses what to become.

In the Kentucky mountain country of 1840, fourteen year-old Caleb lives beneath the hard rule of his father, Eli Mercer: a feared fighter, a dangerous drinker and a man whose buried Pennsylvania past refuses to stay buried. The long rifle over their hearth carries the workmanship of another life, so does the name Rucker, spoken only when old enemies ride into the hills.
