Held Under

He remembers everything about the night his father drowned. Including her.

Dr. Wren Alcott has spent twenty years teaching juries one thing: the memories we are surest of are the ones most likely to be false.

Then a quiet, courteous man is committed to her locked ward after walking into Puget Sound at dawn. He asks for her by name.

He was nine when his father drowned off a Seattle houseboat dock. He saw who did it. A girl of sixteen. A green coat. Her hands on the man’s shoulders, holding him under.

Wren was sixteen that year. She lived on that dock. And she remembers nothing.
