The Widow and the Wind

On an ordinary morning walk through the Oregon foothills, Elaina 12Trees, a widow navigating the hollow quiet of her new life, spots a tattered poster tumbling wildly in the wind. Each time she reaches for it, it skitters just out of grasp, teasing her across the path. With a soft command, her faithful pups dart after it, finally pinning it long enough for her to catch up. When Elaina lifts the poster, the paper feels warm, almost alive, its ancient symbols shifting beneath her fingertips.
