The Snow Debt

Everyone in Silverton Crossing knows the story.

Cairn Rusk left men to die in the snow.

The truth is harder to live with, and he’s never told it to anyone. Least of all his daughter. A disgraced Army scout, Cairn hauls timber and keeps his head down, raising a thirteen-year-old girl and caring for a father whose mind slips a little further every day.

When winter threatens to close the high country, he takes them both up to the old family cabin, hoping the mountain will steady them. Beneath the floorboards he finds stolen Army payroll and ammunition. With them are documents proving Crown Butte Mining forged claims, bought lawmen, and intends to steal Rusk land.
