In the E-Waste Barrens, the broken things still hum, and one of them is Howard.

Howard Cur survives a hundred-mile graveyard of pre-collapse hardware by knowing what’s still alive in the wreckage. A cracked logic board. A dead transformer. A drone bird that just needs a reason to fly again. The other scavengers call him witch. They aren’t wrong.

Underneath his sleeves, bluish-silver tracks of wire are woven into his skin. Pre-collapse circuitry the Vanguard wouldn’t approve of. Pre-collapse circuitry that makes him hear what’s left in the static, the tiny telepathic bird he calls Sparrow, the magnetic scream of a buried server farm, the rhythmic thrum of a Vanguard scout-class scrubber drifting closer.
