Echo Island: The Clan Games

Thirteen years ago, a woman came out of the Burly Wood carrying a small wooden box. She died on the Great Wall getting it over.

Calum O’Brian is fifteen, average in every measurable way, and keeps a journal about it. Then a stolen box etched with flowers lands in his hands, and it does something it has never done for anyone else: it glows. It hums with drums nobody else can hear. It pulls him west, toward the forest no one crosses. And when he holds it near certain people, it tells him, without words, who not to trust.

The same week, he is picked for the Eighth Clan’s team in the Clan Games, five contenders, ten clans, one summer to train. His mentors have their own reasons for wanting him close. So does a masked rebel in the Green Forest who calls himself the Hero, and who knows more about the box, and about Calum’s mother, than anyone in the Clans will admit.
