Hertell Daggett Junior runs a sunbaked pet cemetery on the outskirts of Bakersfield with copper specks in his brain, an accordion he can’t play, and more questions than answers. His life is strange. It is about to get considerably stranger.

When something begins humming beneath the cracked earth of his property, Hertell uncovers the impossible: a sealed civilization, perfectly preserved since 1963, full of people who sing in harmony and have never once heard a politician say absolutely nothing, with total confidence.

But when they step into the sunlight for the first time in sixty years, the world above is not ready for them. The cameras arrive. Then the SWAT team. Then the government, embarrassed and outflanked at every turn, decides to solve the situation in the most aggressively bureaucratic way imaginable.
