Stormbringer: Broken Chains

Briar Harrow has been measured, tested, and found wanting.

At fifteen she fails the rite that sorts Caldreth’s children into storm-callers and healers, and the village delivers its verdict kindly, which is worse. Her mother has taught her to hide what her face does. Her father needs her to marry into a rival branch of the family so the crown will let Greymoor keep its charter. Everyone agrees it’s the sensible thing.

Briar refuses. Then the ridge opens beneath her feet.

Below the hill lies the ruin of a civilization that fell for the very reason Caldreth teaches its children to obey: it split its people in two and never put them back together. With a half-grown raven as her only company, Briar must cross trials built for pairs, free what the dead left imprisoned, and decide what she’s willing to pay to stay alive. Three gods are watching her do it, and none of them wants what she wants.
