Half a million years ago, a dying civilization left something behind.

When a derelict alien structure at the edge of the solar system starts broadcasting, Commander Frances Drake takes the science vessel Hawking out to find it. What she finds isn’t a ruin. It’s a machine the size of a city, still running, and it has been waiting.

The Predecessors lost their war, but before the end they seeded a primitive world with the architecture of their last hope, and half a million years later that architecture is waking in Drake’s own blood.
