Abandoned by her parents and branded a rebellious adolescent, Yami refuses to let the dust of a small sugar town swallow her. Instead, she fights her way into the prestigious world of law, determined to build a future on her own terms.

Then the Soviet Bloc collapses, and a political tsunami plunges Cuba into starvation.

Overnight, the rules of survival change. The island splits in two: a desperate populace paid in worthless pesos, and wealthy foreign tourists carrying the dollars needed to buy food. As doctors and teachers abandon their posts to hustle on the streets, Yami watches her dreams of love, career, and family dissolve into the dystopian landscape.

To survive, she must join the ranks of the jineteras, the young, educated women forced into the booming world of sex tourism.
