London, October 1894. Sherlock Holmes has barely recovered from the shadow of Reichenbach when a telegram arrives from Trinity College, Cambridge. A Senior Fellow is dead in a locked room, face frozen in absolute terror, door bolted from within. The college physician calls it cardiac failure. Dr Blackwood calls it murder.

Holmes calls it a silencing.

What begins as a locked-room mystery at one of England’s most ancient institutions rapidly becomes something far more dangerous. At its centre is Silworth, a brilliant, embittered chemist with a genuine grievance, a lethal compound of his own devising, and a patience built over years of calculated waiting. The conspiracy has already claimed three lives.
