Magic runs through San Francisco like current through old wiring, invisible, unpredictable, and most people never know it’s there. Jake Caro isn’t most people. He can feel the city’s power humming beneath the pavement, taste it in his morning coffee, see it shimmering under the Bay at high tide.

He used to work for the agency that keeps it all quiet. He left before they figured out just how much he could do.
