Mere Smoke

Hapless stranger? Or deceptive killer?

New York, 1934.

The cat burglar, called The Smoke, has a unique set of skills, safe-cracker, pickpocket, master-thief type of skills.

However, after a night at a jazz club, he comes across a down-on-his-luck prize fighter and plays the role of good Samaritan.

The kid is from out of town; the kind of sap this city chews up and spits out. Swindled, broke, beaten up and tossed to the streets, the guy simply wants to shake the dust off and catch a bus back to Minnesota.

The Smoke has other ideas. A simple favor that might help get the kid’s dough back.

But the favor turns into disaster after he trips over the freshly bludgeoned corpse of a fight promoter. The Smoke is now the prime suspect for murder. With the heat on his tail, he rushes to clear his name. But soon finds himself entangled with warring mob factions and in the crosshairs of a contract killer.
