Can anyone save Claire? Rebels have kidnapped the not-entirely-sane niece of the Director, the iron-handed ruler of the planet Offyonder. No one knows what they will do next.

Martin Allgeier, an assistant librarian and a man of neither significance nor stature, is on a mission. He hires Sol, a celebrated interstellar bounty hunter, to rescue Claire. This is his last chance at the career he wants.

The rebels are an enigma, seemingly everywhere and nowhere, their ruthlessness attested by the bodies left behind them. Somehow, Martin and Sol must track them down on a subcontinent across the ocean from the planet’s main settlement, extract Claire, and return her safely to the Director. Failure may upend Offyonder’s cherished civic order and justice. More important for Martin and Sol, failure could cost them their lives.
