The Stepmother

In every fairytale the stepmother is the monster.

The children hate her. They look at Diana like she’s the monster who invaded their home.

Their mother is dead. Their father has moved on. And Diana, broken and starting over, said yes anyway.

Now as the new wife, Diana wakes some mornings with hours she can’t account for. She finds herself saying things she doesn’t remember. Her husband holds her close and tells her not to worry.

But she is noticing things. Patterns. Locked doors. A family full of secrets and a mother’s death that everyone accepted too easily.
