The Broken Fife

Before the first shots of the Civil War are fired, Junius Hart’s life changes forever. He falls in love with Ruby, enslaved on his father’s farm, and vows to protect her when he uncovers a plot to steal her away. But their bid for freedom through the Underground Railroad ends in heartbreak when Jayhawkers ambush them, and Ruby is captured.

Junius’s only weapon is his music. A gifted fifer since boyhood, he enlists in the Missouri State Guard, hoping the march of armies will lead him back to Ruby. Instead, he is swept into the Confederate Army, trapped between his devotion to Ruby and his growing doubts about the cause he serves.
